Sewage Flood

Floods are always destructive and a massive undertaking to clean up, but the one thing that can make a flood even worse is a flood that is the result of a sewage backup or spill.Daytona-Beach-Sewer-Backup-Cleanup-386-202-4031-163014_image.jpg

Sewage floods are particularly malicious because it is a certainty that the water you are dealing with is contaminated, more commonly referred to as “black water”.  Black water is water that is contaminated at its source, and can prove extremely harmful or fatal if consumed by humans.

Of course the first order of business is to be safe.  Turn off all electricity and gas to the damaged area, and be sure to wear protective gear.  Waterproof boots, gloves, long sleeves and pants, and protective eyewear are musts when working in and around contaminated water.

Normal procedures can be used to remove excess water, using a shop vac or submersible pump.  Be sure to drain the water as far from your home as possible, preferably through a sink or drainage vent.

In the case of sewage based floods, it’s probably a sure bet that rugs, carpets, mattresses and furniture are unsalvageable.  It will be less expensive to replace them as opposed to trying to repair them.

Walls and flooring will have to be scrubbed down, cleaned, and disinfected.  Be sure to check drywall for stains or swelling, two surefire signs of water damage.

Sewage based floods are best treated by professionals.  Call your local water damage restoration company today for a free estimate, and let them restore your home or business to its former beauty.
