Flood Water DamageFlood water damage is usually quite massive, and the idea of
cleaning it all up a bit intimidating. But
flood water damage should at least be dried up and cleaned as soon as possible
to avoid mold problems, which can cause their own brand of health hazards.
You should be careful when entering a flood ravaged
home. Wear waterproof boots and gloves,
as well a long sleeves and pants.
Eyewear is also suggested, as you do not want contaminated flood water
splashing in your eyes. Turn off the electricity at the breaker box, and immediately
move all electrical appliances and electrical cords to higher ground to dry
out. Do not use these appliances again
until they have been checked out by a qualified technician. Throw out what cannot be salvaged. Rugs, particle board furniture, mattresses,
food, photos, and books. Any food that
has been in contact with flood waters should also be discarded, although some
canned goods may be protected.
Clean up all standing water using submersible pumps, and
remove remaining moisture using fans and dehumidifiers. Excess moisture left on surfaces or in the
air can produce mold in as little as 48 hours. Surfaces should not only be dried, but cleaned and
disinfected. Don’t forget about flooring
under carpets. Have all electrical and plumbing systems inspected by a
certified HVAC professional before using them.
Replace all filters and switches. For best results with all your flood damage needs, contact
your local IICRC certified flood water damage professionals. They are available 24/7 to serve all of your
fire or water damage repair and restoration needs. |
