Flood RepairFloods are probably the most destructive natural disasters
in the United States, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to life
and property every year. In the
aftermath of a flood, the destruction is so vast that it seems impossible for
life to ever be the same again. Flood repair is possible, however, even if your home is
severely damaged. It simply becomes a
matter of taking the right steps in the right order, and doing the jobs
thoroughly the first time. Failure to do
so may result in any number of additional headaches. Upon returning to a flood damaged home, do not enter until
you have checked the structure for stability.
Floods can actually shift a home on its foundation, making it prone to
collapse. Likewise, make sure the
electricity and gas are shut off. You
don’t want to be working in standing water when the electricity comes back on. Wear protective clothing, including waterproof boots and
glove, and don’t forget the eyewear. Remove loose items, electrical appliances, and furniture
from the home. These can be cleaned up
elsewhere. Appliances should be checked
out by a qualified technician before using them again. Now the hard part; excess water will need to be extracted
from the home. Water extraction is
typically accomplished by the use of pumps or wet-dry vacs. Secondary drying, the removal of all residual
moisture from the air or various surfaces, is done by using a number of fans
and dehumidifiers to circulate the air. Carpets will need to be cleaned and disinfected, likewise
for warped floors or swelled drywall.
The keyword here is “dry”……everything must be completely dry to prevent
mold and mildew from taking root. It’s a big job to be sure.
