Home / Education / Water Damage Guide / Water Damage Prevention
Parents’ Place, a center and resource for parents and children, endured extensive water damage over the holidays. The resource center, used mainly for storage for toys and other things used in programs for parents and after school activities, suffered from burst water pipes. The property was checked on over the holiday recess, but no damage was detected until it was too late.
The damage includes ruined walls, ceilings, and carpets, as well as substantial damage to the kitchen area. The damage is so severe that the board of directors has decided it is best to demolish the entire section that is damaged from the water, as restoration is not a viable option. Parents’ Place is currently looking at all funding options, in order to determine the best way to pay for the program’s devastating loss.
When outside temperatures are freezing, ice can form inside of your pipes. This causes water to build up, which often results in burst pipes. Burst pipes can cause a considerable amount of damage, and it is important to prevent this from happening to avoid the damage altogether.
If you live in an area where the climate reaches freezing temperatures in the winter, check all the pipes that are easily accessible. If you notice any holes or cracks, repair them immediately to avoid further breakage. Additionally, it may be necessary to insulate your pipes. Sold in rolls, insulation for pipes can prevent them from freezing in the first place. Finally, one of the simplest ways to prevent your pipes from freezing is to keep the water flowing. If you know that temperatures are going to be freezing while you are away, turn on all faucets so they drip, in order to keep water flowing at all times. Water damage is devastating, and more often than not, restoration is not possible, making prevention the best tool against it.
