Home / Education / Water Damage Guide / Steps To Take After A Flood
If you live in an area that has been flooded, you'll need to be wise and stay safe. For instance, stay on firm ground. Even moving water that is only 6 inches deep can sweep you off your feet. Also, downed power lines may be in contact with that water, which could prove deadly for you.
Be sure to call your insurance company right away if a flood has damaged your home. Take pictures or videos to document the damage and keep all receipts as you make repairs.
Before entering your water damaged home, turn off the electricity and gas. Get an inspection before turning them back on. Be alert for gas leaks and do not light a flame until you are given the okay from a professional that all is clear. After entering your house, open all windows and doors to begin the ventilation process.
Depending on the amount of damage, you may need to contact a professional clean up crew to pump out water. Also, all contaminated items should be thoroughly disinfected or discarded if they’re damaged beyond repair.
You also will want to contact your local water company to make sure that your tap water is not contaminated. Wash the taps and let the water run for about 10 minutes before you attempt to use that tap water.
Above all, don't assume that a flood can't happen again. Learn from experience and do what you can to prepare for a flood. Your family and insurance company will thank you.
