Residential Water Damage

Residential water damage is a very disheartening problem to deal with. Water damage can happen in a variety of ways, such as flooding from rain, the breaking of water pipes that flow into your house, violent storms that cause your roof to leak, cracks in the foundation of your house that allow outside ground water to enter your house, the hoses to your water heater becoming damaged, and various other means.

Mold

Some major household and health issues, such as mold, mildew, and other fungal growths, often come with residential water damage. Mold and mildew flourish in moist, humid basements because they are prime conditions for fungus to grow. These fungal growths can also spread throughout the whole house, not only contaminating the structural parts of the house, but also carpet and furniture. The airborne spores from the fungal growths can even cause health problems, such as respiratory issues and allergies.

Repairs

When something happens that causes substantial flooding, the sooner you tackle fixing it and cleaning up after it, the better the chance that more of the affected home can be salvaged. There are businesses that specialize in cleaning up after water damage, including extracting water, structural drying, repairs to plumbing, document drying, and helping with other damaged contents. If the damage is too severe to handle yourself, hiring a professional may be the best move.

Damage Claims

Also, if you do have residential water damage, be very careful when it comes to making a minor claim to your insurance company. Many insurance companies will greatly increase your premium and may even drop you if you have more than one or two claims.
