Preventing Fire Damage During The Holidays

The holidays offer a great opportunity to decorate our homes. Christmas trees, lights, and candles are a big part of holiday décor, but these decorations can be a potential fire hazard. By taking extra safety precautions, you can enjoy a damage free holiday season.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees are the cause of most house fires. Be careful when having a tree flocked, and know what is being applied to the branches, as some flocking materials are very flammable. The tree should have bright green branches and a sticky trunk. If needles are falling off the tree, it is too dry. Be sure to adequately water your tree to prevent it from drying out.

Lights

Use caution with your holiday lights and be sure not to overload electrical circuits. Check for damaged wires and missing bulbs. Candles look beautiful, but never leave them unattended. Be sure you have at least one foot of clearance on all sides when they are lit, and never put lit candles on a Christmas tree.

Fire Hazards

It is important to keep paper decorations away from fireplaces and open flames. Be sure that your electrical cords are all UL approved. Pay close attention to small children as well, especially when they are around Christmas trees and lit candles.
