Home / Education / Mold Damage Guide / Moldy Carpet
It is important to realize that a moldy carpet is not just an expensive nuisance, but could be a great expense on your health and the health of your family.
Molds can cause many unsightly areas in and around our home, but the most dangerous are the molds that can affect health. Mold manifests as small, black specks spattered around the affected area or as white spider web looking lines. The musty smell that you can find in older homes is due to this mold. It can cause people to develop headaches, nausea, and memory loss.
Young children, babies, and toddlers who crawl around on the carpet and are notorious for putting things in their mouths could ingest some of this mold and become seriously ill. More and more attention is being paid to this silent killer and research is being done to find solutions for combating it. Mold can be fatal to some humans or leave them with a debilitating disease.
If you happen to notice any mold growing on your carpet or begin to smell that musty odor, you may want to check your carpeting first, especially if you know that it has gotten wet prior to noticing the smell. It is important to note that if there has been lot of water damage, that the whole carpet should be removed as well as the tack strips, because they could have developed mold as well. If there are only a few areas that need treatment, you can use chemicals or natural treatments to remove the mold.
