Home / Education / Home Disaster Kit
When disaster strikes, there is nothing worse than being unprepared. Floods, fire, and hurricanes are all unpredictable and can happen at any second. When they do happen, they rain damage and destruction on the unprepared. You could be stranded without electricity, telephones, gas, sewage, etc. for days and sometimes weeks. It is important to have the necessary means to survive an event like this. A disaster supply kit is a kit made up of items necessary to survive a disaster situation. Assembling a disaster supply kit is an easy way to become prepared for the worst.
No matter what you should always have water, food, clothing, tools, and special items that are needed for medical and practical reasons. These are all items that should be readily available in case of an emergency. The items that you would most likely need to survive in an evacuation should be put into a fairly easy-to-carry container (duffle bag, camping bag, etc.).
In order to be truly prepared when disaster strikes, you should have three disaster kits. Having a kit in each major location that you go to is wise. You should have one at your home, one at your workplace, and one in your vehicle. Your home disaster kit should have enough supplies, food, and water to last you at least three to five days. This kit should be located in a marked location that each of your family members knows where it is and has easy access to. The disaster kit that you keep at work should be kept entirely in one container. It should include water, food, and anything else you might need in a work evacuation scenario. The disaster kit in your car can include food, water, a set of jumper cables, maybe a blanket and some warm clothing (if it's winter), and a first aid kit.
The importance of kepping the kit up-to-date and safe to use is equal to the importance of actually owning a disaster kit. In an effort to do this, it is advised that you keep all canned foods in a safe place, keep all foods fresh (restock before expiration), and keep any clothing or other items in resealable plastic bags to avoid them getting wet or ruined in a disaster.
Now that you have the knowledge to assemble a disaster supply kit, you are prepared to face any disaster head on. Take a look at our Home Disaster Plan to learn even more about preparing for disasters!
