Home / Education / Water Damage Guide / Flooding Aftermath
Floods are devastating disasters that can damage homes and ruin cities. The obvious effects are seen in the aftermath, but there are many hidden dangers following a flood to be aware of in one's home.
Various health dangers lurk in and around flood water such as the West Nile Virus, Escherichia coli (E. coli), dangerous bacteria and disease carrying mosquitoes. Take necessary precautions, and avoid allowing floodwater to get into your eyes, mouth, open sores and on hands. Remember, these waters are contaminated.
Raging flood waters have usually seeped into wells and water supply facilities. This affects the cleanliness of drinking water for homes and businesses, so only drink bottled water. Not drinking tap water will help you avoid ingesting any harmful bacteria, which can cause severe illness.
Immediately following a flood, the danger of electrical shock arises with downed wires. This is a good reason to stay out of water and wait for rescue personnel to arrive. Notice any wires or cords that could threaten you and the safety of your family.
Another danger is mold. Due to the fact that your house and grounds have become saturated with water and other hazardous materials, water has no place to go inside the house. The longer saturation persists, the higher the chance of mold growing, as well as other problems.Household mold can cause allergic reactions and potentially fatal respiratory seizures. One must keep a rational mind, follow directions from media and rescue staff, and heed with caution in and after a serious flood.
