Effective Water Damage Cleanup
Water damage is a hassle for any homeowner. Even the smallest spills can be frustrating
and time consuming to correct effectively, and larger spills or leaks can cause
extensive damage if not taken care of correctly. It is important to take the right steps, in
the right order, to make sure your water damage restoration efforts are not
wasted.
The first step is to remove the excess water from the
damaged area. For some spills, using
towels to sop up the water will suffice.
More extreme cases, such as a burst pipe or flash flood, may require the
use of a wet-dry vac or high powered pump to remove the water. Be sure you pump the water down a sink or
drain; pumping it out into your yard will not help at all.
Once the excess is out, surfaces will still retain a good
bit of moisture. This needs to be
thoroughly dried before any further repair work is undertaken. You will need to open al doors and windows
and get as much air circulating as possible.
Use fans, blowers, air movers, dehumidifiers, as many as possible, to
facilitate drying. Move them around
every so often to insure a thorough drying out.
Use a digital moisture meter to measure
the moisture levels in the air.
The reason for keeping moisture levels down is simple….moisture
breeds mold, and mold brings with it a whole host of potential health problems
from the slight to the severe. If left
unchecked, mold removal and cleanup can be a difficult process.
Likewise for sewage. Sewage damage cleanup should always be
conducted by a professional to avoid environmental contamination, personal
illness, or even death. .jpg)
