Mold Mildew
Mold and mildew are terms often used interchangeably to
describe the downy or furry growth on the surface of organic matter. They are usually caused by fungi, as a direct
result of dampness and decay, and are absolutely vital to our environment, as
they help break down organisms after death.
The problem is when these same spores come into contact with living
organisms.
Mold and mildew can begin to grow on a damp surface within
24 to 48 hours. They reproduce by tiny
airborne spores, lightweight seeds that travel by air or water. Molds digest organic material, eventually
destroying the material they grow on, and then spread to destroy adjacent
materials. They are usually first
noticeable due to their distinctive mold/mildew smell
Molds can appear as a result of flooding in your home, sewer
backup, plumbing or roof leaks, damp basements or crawlspaces, as well as high
humidity as the result of steam cooking or even dryer vents.
Mold/mildew sickness can occur when spores are inhaled and
begin to go to work trying to break down a perfectly healthy organism. Never underestimate mold/mildew danger, and
always wear a breath mask when working around mold/mildew.
Killing mold/mildew can be as simple as using a bleach/water
solution in smaller cases, or calling in professional help in larger ones. Mold mildew remover is also readily available
at your local supermarket. Mold/mildew
bathroom problems are usually easily eradicated, but larger problems will
require more heavy duty response.
