Dry Carpet
Carpet that has been damaged by water should be immediately
dried out and properly cleaned and treated in order to avoid mold or mildew
growth. Molds and mildew can begin
growing within 48 hours of the carpet getting wet, so to salvage your carpet,
time is of the essence.
You’ll first need to vacuum the carpet with a wet-dry vacuum
unit. This is to remove as much of the
water from the carpet as possible. It
also makes it easier to lift and maneuver if you have to remove it. Pull the carpet up and inspect the padding. Wet or damaged padding should be thrown out
and replaced. Trying to repair damaged
padding is more trouble than it is worth.
Lift the carpet from the floor and place it across something
like a sawhorse. Then run air
conditioners, fans, blowers, dehumidifiers…this will remove the residual
moisture left in the carpet as well as facilitate drying of the flooring
underneath. Reinstalling carpet while
either it or the floor is still wet can set the stage for mold, which spreads quickly
and is difficult to remove.
Be sure to lay the carpet flat to dry. If it isn’t flat when it dries, it will not
lay flat when you try to reinstall it.
