Fire Water Damage
Fire and water are the two most destructive forces that any
house can suffer, and of the two, water is the most harmful? Why is that?
Simply because fire tends to confine its destructive effect to wherever
it is, whereas water can seep and creep into every nook and cranny you can
imagine, continuing to do damage for as long as it remains untreated, and
remaining fairly invisible to the untrained eye. I personally would much rather deal with a
fire than a flood.
Recovery from fire or water damage is similar in many ways:
Make sure the structure is sound before re-entering. Both fire and water can weaken structural
members considerably, making them prone to collapse.
Shut off all electricity and gas. Water and electricity mix about as well as
gas and fire do.
Wear protective clothing when poking around in damaged
buildings. Waterproof boots, heavy duty
gloves, and protective eyewear are recommended. Long pants and sleeves are also a plus.
Open all doors and windows to get air circulating…..this
will facilitate drying in a water damaged house, and clear smoke odor from a
fire damaged one.
Remove all loose items, furniture, and appliances…they can
be repaired and cleaned up elsewhere without being an impediment to subsequent
repair efforts.
Document the damage through photos or video; this will prove
invaluable when the time comes to get results from your insurance company.
Finally, call a professional. Your local IICRC fire and water damage
