Flood Clean Up Tips

A title like “Flood Clean Up Tips” sounds deceptively simple, when in reality flood clean up jobs are anything but.  Rather it is more of an exact science, where steps need to be taken swiftly, in the right order, and done right the first time.  Failure to do so can result in thousands of extra dollars in repair costs and additional heartache for you and your loved ones.flood1.jpg

Whether you are looking at basement flood cleanup, flood damage cleanup, hurricane clean up, tsunami clean up, whatever…. The basics are all quite the same.  Here are a few tips to make life a little easier in the wake of flood damage.

First of all, when dealing with a flood event, the best (but hardest) thing to do is to leave and let the flood do what it will.  Staying and trying to ride out a flood will not stop it and will put your life at risk.  It’s not worth it.  Take your loved ones and move to higher ground.

Once the all clear has been given to return to your home, check for structural damage before you enter.  Water can weaken or even shift foundations, increasing the chances for a collapse.water-damage.jpg

Shut off all electricity and gas.  Electricity and water do not mix.  Don’t find out the hard way.

Wear protective clothing, waterproof boots and gloves, and appropriate eye wear when working in flood waters.

Remove all furniture and loose items from your home to be dried out and restored elsewhere.

Open windows and doors to get as much air circulating as possible. This will help facilitate drying.

Contact your insurance company and a local IICRC certified flood clean up company.  The ideal provider will be able to handle all of your flood clean up needs, from drying to carpet cleaning, to mold removal, etc.  Call today for a free estimate.
