Carpet Water Damage

Wet-carpet-cropped.jpgWater damaged carpets not only look bad, but they can actually be health hazards.  Wet carpet that is left unattended for an extended period of time gives way to additional problems such as carpet mold and mildew, which can cause problems as mild as allergic reactions and as serious as lung disease.  If you have any significant carpet water damage, it is vital to deal with it as quickly as possible.

First of all, you shout shut off or block the water at its source.  Then ascertain whether or not water damage restoration is possible.  Most carpet water damage is not permanent unless the carpet has been sitting for longer than two days.  Carpet water removal is as follows.

1543640_f248.jpgCarpet water extraction; Extract as much water from the carpet as possible using a wet-dry vacuum unit.  If possible, take the carpet outside to allow it to finish drying completely.  This will allow you to dry and clean the flooring underneath.  Throw out any carpet padding that is wet or damaged.  Do not re-lay any carpet until all surfaces are dry.

Drying; Let the carpet lay flat while it dries; failure to do so may make it difficult to re-lay later on.  Have the carpet professionally cleaned, disinfected, and sanitized before laying it back down in your home.  This will cut down on chances of mold and reduce any possible related odors.

If you do find evidence of mold, you may want to contact a professional proficient in carpet mold removal or remediation.  This can be a very difficult process which again, if not done right, can create more problems later on.  Don’t take chances.
