Flooded Basement
Basements are the one area of your home most prone to flood
damage, simply due to their low lying nature.
Basement flooding can occur for any number of reasons, the ubiquitous
heavy rainfall, clogged drains or downspouts, inadequate runoff in the
surrounding landscape. 98% of all
basements will experience flood problems at some point, so the best move is to
prepare for it.
The easiest solution would be to have a waterproof basement,
but failing that, install a sump pump or sump pit in your basement, designed to
catch excess water and drain it off before it has the chance to accumulate.
Once you discover the flood problem in your basement, the
first thing to do is to determine the source of the water, if possible, and
shut it off.
Use a high powered pump or wet-dry vacuum unit to remove the
water. These can be easily rented from
your local water damage repair service.
Be sure to vent the water as far away from your home as possible to
avoid it simply flowing right back in.
Once the excess is out, use fans to circulate the air and
facilitate the drying process. You may
also want to use a dehumidifier to remove residual moisture from the air. This will minimize your chances of have to
deal with flooded basement mold or other toxins that are so prone to pop up
following a basement flood.
If the damage is severe, you may want to skip the do it
yourself idea and call a professional.
